The stage was set last night for an epic battle between the Raiders and the Predators.
Both Teams were 0-4 and in the previous week the Raiders came off a tough loss against the Pirates 27-20 and the Predators lost to Sydney Uni 67 – 0.
Both Teams wanted to prove to themselves that they could win, both teams wanted to be in the winning locker room at full time.
In the end it was the Raiders who triumphed in beating the Predators 16 – 13.
The Half Time score was 14 -0 and the Predators fought back hard in the 2nd half and scored a touchdown to bring the score back to 14 – 6. The Predators went for a two point conversion and some Great pressure by David “Super Dave” Dean forced the predators Quarterback to throw off balance and Dean “ Pocket Rocket” Borghuis intercepted the pass and returned it all the way for a 2 point play.
The score put the Raiders up to 16 -6. The Raiders Offense moved the ball well at times but penalties seemed to keep the Raiders from progressing. The Predators were then able to score another touchdown and they converted on the extra point to bring the score to 16-13.
A last minute interception by Raiders LB # 21 Nick Moss with a minute remaining on the clock ensured that the Raiders had the final possession and took a well deserved knee at the end of the game.
Mental Toughness and desire was the key ingredient for this win as some players had to play “Iron Man” Football and other players had to step up and fill in for injured players. A Special mention goes out to Jason Swenson #63 who had to play his 1st game ever as a centre and did a great Job in filling in. Another Special Mention goes out to Normandy Calma a rookie who started his first game at Left Guard and did a solid job.
On Defence Rookie Defensive End # 47 “ Joe Williams” did a great Job of pursuing the Predators QB and made some nice tackles.
Football is a game of inches and that was typified in last night’s game with a touchdown saving ankle Tap by # 23 Daryl Jones.
Last night’s win characterises what Raider Football is all about as the Raiders never quit.
The Raiders now have their 1st win of the Year and are sitting in equal 4th position on the ladder.
The Raiders next game is on Saturday October 24th against the Penrith Outlaws at 7.00pm at Pennant Hills.
